Why close Dr. Fe Del Mundo Medical Center?

Why close

Dr.

Fe

Del

Mundo

Medical

Center

?

 Nobody
gives a damn hoot that

Dr.

Fe

Del

Mundo

Medical

  Center

has been forced to close operation about a
month ago after some disgruntled employees displaced by the new

STI

management staged a workers’ strike. Whether indeed security of tenure may have
been violated in the case of regular employees affected by the alleged cost-cutting
measure is a matter for the Department of Labor and Employment to resolve. And the longer it takes to arrive at a final
judgment, the greater irreversible consequences could result from this untimely
closure. Soon, there is only one day
left to save the Center from permanent “paralysis’.

 Meantime,
it behooves upon the Secretary of the Department of Health to do everything
within his authority not to let this sad comeuppance simply stare him to the
eyes. Something must be done and it must
be done now. For the sooner the medical
center gets back into operation, the better it is for our country and our people. The center enjoys an international reputation
as probably the best specialty hospital for children in the country with not
few doctors from foreign countries being trained under the tutelage of no less
than

Dr.

Fe

Del Mundo

,
national scientist and a who’s who in the international medical landscape.

 It will be
such a great loss that one specialty hospital for children is forced to fold
tent only because some rather irrational union busting activity took
reins. Why didn’t any agency of
government or high government official come into the scene so that closure
should not have taken shape? Not few
nagging questions from those who patronize the medical center in terms of its
facilities, affordable fees, and pool of pediatricians will remain unanswered. At the very least, the FDMMC cannot just
abandon its social responsibility to a public at large that have always
patronized its services unless all options have been made available.

 If it were
the new

STI

management that seems
to be the culprit, then why not replace it with the old? If it were the displaced workers that appear
to be the cause, why not employ them back? Why hire a new management whose suitability is quickly under siege? Why recruit new workers or employees when the
old and regular ones prove to be more competent? Is FDMMC at the brink of bankruptcy? Is the new management taking over to actually
bail out the center from its fiscal woes? Whatever really happened to this medical center that used to be called
the Banawe Children’s

Medical

Center

? The people it has served for many long years
have every right to be apprised as to what led to what? Who pushed FDMMC to the wall?

 From where
I stand, its incomprehensible closure isolated, abandoned, displaced, violated
the rights of patients to be treated in the hospital they believe will give
them the highest satisfaction, the greatest hope from their ailments, and to
receive the care, services of its well-seasoned medical practitioners. All three of my children have received the
best care from its most seasoned pediatrician,

Dr.

Edgardo

Gonzales

and we can only thank him so much
for having provided the best services of a dedicated medical practitioner – a
tradition of excellence that is presumably spawned by the owner of the Center
herself.

 True
enough, in spite of a place like Banawe in

Quezon City

, FDMMC has not proved to be a
profit-oriented medical center. Have it
been that, it could have raked a lot of profits in no time at all. But it remained the most affordable, the most
accessible, and the best specialty hospital for children – past, present,
future. Thus, it must be saved and we
can only pray that it reopens soon.  No well-meaning government can afford to lose
one of its best assets. No well-meaning
health secretary can afford to give the problem a blank stare. No well-meaning labor secretary can afford to
just let a pack of rather troublesome agitated workers do great peril to a
medical institution such as FDMMC.

 If it takes
no less than political will to resurrect

Dr.

Fe

Del

Mundo

Medical

Center

, then let
us give it one. For sure, many would
want to even probably contribute every little sum of money to buoy it up if it
were a case of bankruptcy. There will
even be more foreign grants pouring in if only to put the ship back in an even
keel. This little Titanic that is the
FDMMC should be saved at all costs and it will not kill the national government
giving it state subsidies, if need be. Just
first and foremost, bring FDMMC back into operation before it’s too late.
